The University of Ghent visited UAVR and training within EPIBOOST regarding copepod culturing and testing has been accomplished

During the past months, Dr. Ilias Semmouri from UGent has been training the UAVR team concerning the implementation of culturing and testing protocols with the marine copepod Acartia tonsa, one of our model organisms in EPIBOOST. Dr. Semmouri trained the team, in partyicular Dr. Inês Macário and Dr. Cátia Venâncio on the best laboratory practice to culture the organisms in the laboratory, including the production of their food (specific microalgae strains), the culturing setup in aerated aquaria, the separation of different life-stages and the separation of males from females. The optimization of testing protocols was also supported by Dr. Semmouri, as well as the exploration of different approaches for testing towards meeting the requirements of the planned epigenetics work.
We were delighted to receive Dr. Semmouri in our laboratories. A lot was learnt technically, but we also had a lot of fun while learning and discussing many interesting topics with Dr. Semmouri related to the EPIBOOST project and science in general. There was also room for spending some time at the beach… That’s the advantage of working with organisms in the lab that need to taste natural seawater to be happy!
Hopefully we will see you soon Ilias!
