A joint effort to UAVR by the UAVR widening projects
From the 13th to the 15th of March 2024, the second edition of the soft skills training programme was held at UAVR following a joint organizational effort by the widening projects coordinated herein: the Twinnings Supralife, EPIBOOST, Fonda, Epiviral and the ERA-Chair BESIDE. This programme was targeted at researchers and science managers, addressing important skills beyond hard skills that are critical to promote careers and success overal in R&I endeavors.
The first day started with Bert Meijer (Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands), Béatrice Adelizzi (DNA Script, France) and Helena Vieira (University of Aveiro, Portugal) sharing their career route and demonstrating the benefits of their (un)conventional paths. Then, an appraisal on scientific publishing and ethics followed with Bert Meijer (Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands) and Sébastien Lecommandoux (University of Bordeaux, France), both with remarkable experience as Editors of renowned Journals. Mental health and the imposter phenomenon in academia were the topics of the next talk by Olya Vvedenskaya (Dragonfly Mental Health), and the day was closed with an appraisal of career development in academia vs. industry by Paula Pérez (Institute for Research and Innovation in Health – i3S, University of Porto, Portugal).
The second day started with an amazing view on diversity, equity and inclusion in science by Alejandra Palermo (Royal Society of Chemistry, United Kingdom), followed by the prominent Open Science framework in Horizon Europe so well presented by Antónia Correia (University of Minho, Portugal) and Diana Silva (University of Aveiro, Portugal), regarding the UAVR institutional approaches. Critical aspects and good practices of data management within the Open Science framework were then addressed by Julian Dederke (ETH Zürich, Switzerland). The day was closed with the insights on project management in research organizations by Bart Jansen (Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research, The Netherlands), complemented by Luísa Sal (University of Aveiro, Portugal) with perspectives tuned to the context of UAVR.
The last day started with a Community building workshop for scientists driven by Olya Vvedenskaya (Dragonfly Mental Health), followed by a session on science innovation driven by Rui Quinta (With Company, Portugal) addressing the process of designing future-proof innovations and then relevant aspects of practical implementation, namely on how to innovate through empathy, collaboration, and experimentation.
